Suzanne Robitaille, author of "The Illustrated Guide to Assistive Technology and Devices" will demonstrate some new cool technologies for those working and living with disabilities at the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library. The library, which features barrier-free architecture and houses browsing collections of braille, recorded, and large-print books, is the perfect backdrop for Suzanne's presentation.
From "no-tech" products, like the handy Braille business card embosser, to "high-tech" gadgets, including new iPhone apps for people with cognitive or communications disabilities, this event promises to be fun and informative for all.
Suzanne will also cover tools such as sign language videophone calls for the deaf; computer accessibility for the blind and vision-impaired; flashing/vibrating products for the hearing-impaired; video game controllers for those with mobility impairments -- and more!
Suzanne Robitaille is the founder and editor of abledbody.com, a website that covers disability news and assistive technology. Growing up profoundly deaf, Suzanne learned firsthand that people with disabilities can benefit from these type of technologies both professionally and socially.
She began her journalism career in 2000 at the Wall Street Journal's interactive operations in New York. A year later, she became a technology columnist for Business Week Online, writing a weekly column on assistive devices and technology. Suzanne has written for various consumer publications and websites, including the Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek Online, and Media Post, among others.

Demos Author Celebrates Release of Third Book at Sea
Travel hasn’t always been as accessible as it is today. In fact, 13 years ago wheelchair-users and slow walkers had pretty limited travel options. That’s when Emerging Horizons editor and Demos author, Candy Harrington began plans to publish a magazine about accessible travel. This fall Candy will celebrate the 10th anniversary of that magazine and the release of her newest accessible travel title, aboard the new Liberty of the Seas.
“I’ve seen a lot of improvements in accessible travel,” says Harrington. “Ten years ago I had to search hard for accessible transportation, lodging, tours and even shore excursions, but today it’s a different story. As the Baby Boomers age tourism providers are becoming more sensitive to the needs of disabled travelers, so today there are lot more choices. From accessible safaris and dive resorts to taxi tours and even balloon rides, there’s something for just about everyone.”
And those aging Baby Boomers have helped bring Harrington’s niche into the mainstream. Her newest title, 101 Accessible Vacations; Travel Ideas for Wheelers and Slow Walkers fills the growing need for information on accessible travel options. “I’ve covered a lot of accessible destinations over the last decade and I’m excited to share them with my readers in this new title," says Harrington.
So now it’s time to celebrate, and as Candy puts it, “What better place to celebrate the release of my third accessible travel title than on the newest and most accessible cruise ship afloat?” So, Candy and her travel photographer husband, Charles Pannell invited their readers to join them on the
Emerging Horizons Celebration Cruise. Sailing from Miami on September 29, 2007 on Royal Caribbean’s new Liberty of the Seas, this Eastern Caribbean getaway will jointly celebrate Emerging Horizons’ 10th birthday and the release of 101 Accessible Vacations.
There will be lots of fun things to do aboard the ship, including an
Emerging Horizons birthday party with gifts for everyone. “And of course everyone will come home with a copy of my new book and a one year subscription to Emerging Horizons,” adds Candy. The cruise will be planned by an accessible cruise specialist so accessible airport transportation and shore tours will be available. “Everyone will be able to participate,” says Harrington.

Emerging Horizons celebration cruise, visit www.EHCruise.com. Candy will also be blogging during the cruise on her Barrier Free Travels blog at www.barrierfreetravels.com.
